Lace wigs are more popular than ever, with the variety and quality coming leaps and bounds in the last few years. Thanks to the quality and general appearance of these wigs being on the up, women are choosing to wear them for longer and more frequently. Wearing a wig more frequently is a good sign, as it shows that you like it… however, this also means that it needs cleaning more frequently.
Why do I need to clean my wig?
The importance of cleaning a wig can’t be overstated, as it show the same symptoms as your natural hair if not maintained properly. For example, if you don’t maintain your wig expect to face: fungal infection, sweat-related itching, greasiness, frizziness and an overall smell which you’re best to avoid.
How to clean a lace wig
Now we know why our wigs need to be clean, let’s see how’s best to do it.
Brush and detangle
To start the wig cleaning process, you first need to brush and detangle it. We suggest using a wide-tooth comb or a specific wig brush. Start brushing the ends of the hair and work your way down to the roots. Avoid a rough brush and breaking the hair, because it’s unlikely to grow back 🙂
Shampoo and wash
As with natural hair, apply shampoo (wig-specific) and rinse using lukewarm water and wash thoroughly. We suggest focusing on the parts of the wig which come into direct contact with your scalp, like the lace front. As stated before, don’t be too rough with the hair as fine HD lace wigs can sustain damage quite easily. Avoid hot water, as the fibers can become damaged.
A dry shampoo is an alternative to cleaning your lace wig. With a dry shampoo, you don’t need water as you just spray the dry shampoo on the dirty/greasy part of your wig and the dirt is removed just like that. If you’re in a rush, a dry shampoo will save you time as you won’t need to wet and dry it.
Condition and dab to dry
Once you’ve sourced a wig-specific conditioner, apply it to the wig but be sure to avoid the lace area in order to prevent build-up. Leave the conditioner to sit for a few minutes and rinse thoroughly as you don’t want leftover conditioner on the wig – as it can lead to build up and a greasy appearance.
Restyle and let sit
Once completely dry, restyle the wig using a brush and heat-safe blow tool if necessary. Once you’ve finished re-styling the wig, let it air for some time before putting it into a bonnet or other protective headwear.
Conclusion
To conclude, you can clean a wig whilst it’s on your head! Just treat a wig like you would your natural hair (just use wig-safe products and don’t be too rough). Avoid washing the wig too frequently, washing it fully every 10 wears is advised. To keep your wig in good condition for as long as possible, keep it in a cool/dry area. By following this cleaning regime you’ll maintain its appearance and condition for longer – ultimately saving you money in the long run.
